PC newby

Here are some facts:
  PSA = 15
  DRE = nothing abnormal
   Biopsy = (12 samples)
Only two samples found something.  Not enough to score on
Gleason.

My age is 58 and am in good health.

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.  There is a family history of
PC.

Prostate Cancer and Hot Flashes

I am an 84 year old man who has excellent health up to this year.  In
March 2001 my doctor found my PSA to be 11 so he took a biopsy of my
prostate and determined,  what I understood to be, the beginning of
prostate cancer.  At the same time he removed a small tumor from my
bladder and said I had bladder cancer which will have to be checked
every three months.
Six weeks ago he gave me my first one month hormone shot. I
started having Hot Flashes and soon was having 3 or 4 hot flashes,
with lots of sweating, every hour, day and night. It is like sleeping
between wet sheets. Two weeks ago I got a 3 month hormone shot.  My
hot flashes and sweating became more sever . Two days ago I started
taking two pills of Megestrol Roxane a day to control the Hot Flashes.
One pill at a time does not help much.  Two pills at a time seem to
help somewhat.
If I do not get control of these hot flashes and sweating I will
not take any more hormone shots but will seek some other form of
treatment for prostate cancer.
Does anyone know how long these Hot Flashes and Sweating will
continue?

Need advice

Hope you can help.  My dad has just had a re-occurrence of prostate
cancer.  He had hormone therapy (lupron depot/zoladax), external beam
radiation and brachy therapy.  His PSA levels were down to ~0 (from
13.6 in 1999) and he appeared cured.  He was re-tested 6/00 at .3.
Then again 12/00 at 1.0 and 6/01 at 3.0.  Thought there was a lab
mistake and tested again 7/01 at 3.8.  Doctor suggests hormone
treatment again now or wait until PSA over 10.0.  Any recommendations
would be greatly appreciated.  He is looking for advice from anyone
with similar experience as to whether these are good options or if
there are better alternatives.  If you could also please reply
directly to him at slppng…@aol.com, that would be great.  He’s not
very computer savvy, although he does know how to check email.
Regardless, we will check back at this newsgroup to see if there are
any responses, and forward them on.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice you can provide,

Ashley Littman

Clinical Trial

I came across this site
http://www.cellgenesys.com/research/ClinicalTrials/G0008.cfm
that might be of interest to some guys.
In order to participate you need to be
Hormone refractory prostate cancer with PSA greater than 5
No bone pain or history of bone pain
  No chemotherapy.
You also should live near one of the two test sites:
  Van Nuys Calif or
  Laguana Woods, Calif
Check it out if it’s of interest and you fit the profile
Maybe somebody will benefit

Ejaculation Frequency and its effect on Prostate

Does a high or low frequency  of sexual
activity have any bearing on the likelihood of
having prostate cancer in later years?  Will a
lifetime of abstinence promote cancer?   I can
understand the affects it might have on
prostatitis.  Youthful sexual energy might promote
infection.   But about cancer, is there any
correlation?
Or is there a bell curve, with twice a week being
the best bet to remain heathy?  Too little and too
much both, over a lifetime,  being harmful.
Just Curious what the NG might think.

tests

My husband has been on PC spes for several years. What test do you think
are necessary to keep track of whether the body is doing OK. ie going
refractive or developing other problems. He seems well, but sometimes
very tired. Thanks, Lydia
